Maintain your website like you maintain your home

All homeowners know that if you don’t spend time keeping up with your home repairs and maintenance, things will start to fall apart. The same thing is true for your website.

It’s really a function of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. All things change with time and just wear out. Dust collects. And while you might think that computers and the digital information on them would be immune to the degradations of time, in the real world that’s not really the case.

Search engines rank you, in part, on the “freshness” of your site. And don’t forget that people also form an opinion of your business based on how your website looks and works. If it is dated or broken, it’s time to think about a website redesign. At the very least it needs some fresh content.

Website maintenance is like home repair.

Your website is like a home. If you don’t maintain it, it will fall into disrepair.

How often should you redesign your site? It depends on your industry, but as a general rule you should consider updating your look every five years or so. If your website is a decade old, it’s safe to say you are overdue for a redesign.

So keep your site updated. Don’t just let it sit there gathering dust. Perform regular updates to the content in a timely manner that helps the site’s users. This will help let the search engines know that your site is important, and they will rank you accordingly.

While you’re at it, remember to mow your yard too.
